Jennifer's experience with the Twilight Eclipse premier brought up a lot of memories of movie experiences in my past. Ever since the first time I saw Jaws in 1975 (my father took me to see it in second grade, which may explain a lot), I've been hooked on movies. Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders, etc..- all drew me into worlds way beyond the trials of a divorce, new schools, moves and just the mundane-ness of childhood. Don't get me wrong, I had a good childhood with great family- but what kid didn't wish to be somewhere spectacular battling super-villains.
"Growing up," I found the same passions for escape were in others- movie geeks!
Movie geeks are my people! When Jennifer stepped into this strange world of premier shows with fans dressed in character swag, she experienced the special world that I lived most of my life! Most of you know how far some of us go to express our passion for certain movie lines. Some even took it further by living the dream!
I will have to say, the Twilight crowd is a bit... different. I've been through many vampire movie cycles (The Hunger, "Bram Stoker's" Dracula/Interview with the Vampire, Blade/Underworld) but this wave of Vampire mania is a little special. Before you get the idea this is going to be another Twilight-bashing article, it isn't. You see, Cathy and I were talking and she set me straight with why I (and many other veteran vamp fans) feel as we do about Twilight is because Twilight was written for girls. Yep, most all other horror/sci-fi/fantasy movies are written for boys and that's why most boys think they're cool and most (with the exception of a few) girls think them silly. Well it's our turn, boys, to be in the girls' shoes (I hope they're not heels- murder on my back!).
"They're just crazy for this movie... No, I mean crazy!"
"They actually wore 'Team Jacob' or 'Team Eward' T-Shirts. That's so stupid"
"They actually spend hours speculating on FaceBook and blogs what will happen with the characters in the next book!"
No guys, this isn't the girls talking about us. This is talking about the girls! Let them have their geeky fun. The story premise isn't that bad, once you get beyond the glittering vampires. It's really kind of an Underworld Light.
The Twilight series taps into what every growing girl wishes for- two hunky guys with immortal powers fighting over her. As simple as that! Kind of a bodice ripper with fangs ;) Cool!
...and don't worry- Hollywood will get back to the boy sci-fi/horror/fantasy movies. Then we can go back to the theaters like dignified fans... but without cooties.
Oh... and girls? "GEEKS!"
