The Modern Office

Monday, March 19th, 2012

I'm not quiet sure why anyone would choose working in an office verses working at home, but they're out there. To me, working at home gives me the freedom to cart my boy back and forth, eat at home and work when the urge hits me (usually 9pm inspirations). Of course, maybe you do like the two hour commute that takes four hours out of your day, wears down your can and gives you an early coronary. Oh sure, I've heard people argue that, "well- you never leave the office." Sure, but even when I'm in the office, I'm at home and available to my family!

Hold on a moment, though- just so you know, I am not a workaholic! I can count the times that I have worked late into the night on one hand- for the year! That's mainly because I also work for a company that believes in a true work-life balance. That, my friends, is the key to working at home! I've heard horror stories of companies that allow working at home, in hopes of working their employees to an early grave. Their is no reason anyone should work more than 40 hours a week! Companies that work their employees 50, 60 or 80 hours a week for a flat salary don't value their employees and show a lack of good management and planning. It's the new sweat shop, complete with stock options, beer and fuse-ball!

...and here's another thing- if you don't mind working in an office, beware the companies that have the shiny offices, complete with stocked beer fridge, fuss-ball table, video game room, masseuse, etc... Yeah! Awesome! They want to make sure you're comfortable and cool with being there because

you.

will.

never.

leave!

Ask what the average work week is like and how often they pull milestone sprints- i.e. all-nighters. Of course, maybe you're hungry and dig that lifestyle (you know- 23 and single), in which case, that place is for you! Don't get me wrong, if I am going to be in an office 16 hours a day, it really does help to have the perks, but I don't want to be in an office 16 hours a day.

Me? I love my family and I love my job! Don't make me choose between the two, boss-man/woman, and I won't disappoint you. In fact, I'll dazzle you with what I can do because I live a fulfilled life!

End of line...

Still, this really is a pretty cool office space!

Static electricity cat iz preparing to zap you! picture of cat with hair standing upIt's the time of year where everything I touch zaps me. I swear I'm a human Tesla coil!  The other day, I stepped out of my car and grabbed the door. There was a visible BOLT of electricity that arced from my car into my hand. My hand was numb for a couple of minutes!  Cathy and I do the "defensive touch" with our hands or elbows before we kiss, lest we scorch our lips.

There are some fun side effects:

  • Our attack kitty (who likes to lacerate me on the way to bed) is especially fun to rub with the velour blanket. He walks away, hair in matted sparking clumps- most excellent!
  • Showing our son the joys of the blue spark of shuffling feet.
  • The playground charge.

I'm very careful when filling the gas tank. I can't believe that someone, at some time, hasn't blown themselves up filling up their tank. I cringe overtime I zap my laptop. I've actually caused it to wake while the screen was closed after zapping it!

As I write this, Cathy is struggling with the charged powdered sugar while making a batch of what will be super-yummy chocolate cookies with peppermint icing.

As a matter of fact, I'm signing off so I can setup our humidifier for the first time this year. Before I go, feel free to comment on your own encounters with out of control electrical [dis]charges, of the static kind!

UPDATE: Yes, someone, somewhere did have an incident at a gas station with static electricity. Thankfully, no explosion occurred :P [video]

Preschool Orientation

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Well... That time has come for us as parents to watch our little boy move on in the world. His first day of orientation at preschool. Cathy and I were there with him, as were all of his classmates and their parents. I saw many tears welling in the parents' eyes as we saw our children meeting and playing with each other.

We're kind of worried because John (not his real name) is not really 100% potty trained and we're both really working hard to keep on top of his training before the first day of school. Because if he decides to poop in his pants at preschool he'll get sent home... for the year! So we're kinda doing a cram-session with him right now. He poops-in-the-potty and he gets to go do stuff, play on the computer or the ipod- he poops his pants, all of them get taken away until he uses the potty again. We've tried everything else and we're desperate!

I guess it really hit me when we all went shopping for his new bed he'll be sleeping on this year. A big-boy (twin) bed! He was so excited to pick it out! Delivery will happen tomorrow. I still see him as my little 3 year old, but that was a long time ago (about 2 months) and he has grown so much.

I know it's common for parents to get emotional send their kids off to school, but I was really hit hard with it. Talking with a dad that just sent their kids off to college made me feel better though. He said that they're able to do a lot more stuff and have had a lot more time. Sure, it was depressing at first, but regaining some semblance of your life without kids was kinda nice.

So, I'm taking a new view on this whole transition and putting it in a positive light. When we send him off on his first day of school, we will look at him as a kid, complete and ready for the world! Sure, when we go home the house will seem horribly empty and there will be tears. We will move on, though and hope the best for him. Cathy and I will be able to do more stuff together as a couple. We're looking at renovating the house. I already have an idea what to do with John's room!

Our little boy... all grown up! I just hope he drives safely.
