If there was any doubt, because of the unseasonably hot weather (unless you're on Venus), it's summertime! Time for ice cream, playing outside and SWIMMING! Being a child of the south, swimming was something we did all summer long (mainly because it was so freak'n HOT)! I earned my water wings at the age of 4 and LOVE the water! Adolescence and adulthood meant visiting the pool less and less however. Now that I'm a father, however, I'm rediscovering the pool all over again with our son :)
There are few things that I've [re]discovered since coming back to the pool:
- I float like a cork! Due to the even layer of dad blubber I have all over my body, I float evenly in as little as 2 feet of water! My wife, Cathy... not so much. That's because she's sexy and thin ;)
- I can't dismount gracefully off of a diving board to save my life! I'm probably saving my life not doing so, anyway!
- Lifeguards are still disgustingly fit! Bastards, all!
- A man my age should keep his eyes to the ground! It's really embarrassing to find, that girl walking away from you (that you were ogling) is only 13 years old! #facepalm
- I can see under water without a mask! Of course, the rest of the day everything is slightly blurry like a love scene in a 1940's movie.
Our son, John (not his real name), has taken to the water like I did. He doesn't know how to hold his breath underwater yet, we never did the water-baby thing with him. There were a couple of scary incidents last summer where he went under, but he (ok- and I) overcame it. He's taking swimming lessons for the first time where they're introducing the kids to the water by kicking, playing and dancing. Slowly teaching them how to put their faces in the water. I tell the little guy how awesome it'll be when he can swim underwater and how it's like flying!
I'm really enjoying this summer with our little family. I'm looking forward to many more in the water!

Preschool Orientation
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010Well... That time has come for us as parents to watch our little boy move on in the world. His first day of orientation at preschool. Cathy and I were there with him, as were all of his classmates and their parents. I saw many tears welling in the parents' eyes as we saw our children meeting and playing with each other.
We're kind of worried because John (not his real name) is not really 100% potty trained and we're both really working hard to keep on top of his training before the first day of school. Because if he decides to poop in his pants at preschool he'll get sent home... for the year! So we're kinda doing a cram-session with him right now. He poops-in-the-potty and he gets to go do stuff, play on the computer or the ipod- he poops his pants, all of them get taken away until he uses the potty again. We've tried everything else and we're desperate!
I guess it really hit me when we all went shopping for his new bed he'll be sleeping on this year. A big-boy (twin) bed! He was so excited to pick it out! Delivery will happen tomorrow. I still see him as my little 3 year old, but that was a long time ago (about 2 months) and he has grown so much.
I know it's common for parents to get emotional send their kids off to school, but I was really hit hard with it. Talking with a dad that just sent their kids off to college made me feel better though. He said that they're able to do a lot more stuff and have had a lot more time. Sure, it was depressing at first, but regaining some semblance of your life without kids was kinda nice.
Our little boy... all grown up! I just hope he drives safely.
