Movie Night

Friday, January 29th, 2010

As my reader(s) know, I'm a big movie fan! Cathy was away tonight at a Kitchen Studio class so I thought my little boy and I would have a "night at the movies!" Now, #1son is only 3.5 years old, so we weren't actually going to a theater (though, that will come when Toy Story 3 releases this summer). In stead, we made popcorn, got out the SweetTarts and drinks, moved the sofa to right in front of the TV, turned out the lights and turned on the movie "UP!" He hadn't seen "UP!" so it was a real treat!

Anyone who has seen this wonderful piece of digital art knows that it will make you cry like a little girl that just was told there is no Santa Clause. I've seen it 4 times now and can say it's effect is not lessoned by repetition. In the beginning of the movie we see a montage the life of the main character (Carl Frederickson) with his wife (Ellie). Wordlessly, we are told of their marriage, dreams, sorrows (infertility) and Ellie's ultimate passing... Anyway, I'm describing to him what the montage is illustrating and he's snuggling up to me closer. Elle's death didn't seem to bother him that much (I don't think he understands the whole "death" thing yet). Short story is, he liked it! He managed to stay focused on it an hour and 10 minutes into the movie- better than I expected.

I'm thinking that the "night at the movies" will be a monthly thing. He really liked the special night aspect of it and I've got to work him up to staying focus on a full-length movie by summer (Toy Story 3)!

BTW- this "movie-night" is counter-balanced by many hours of one-on-one father-son play! Don't judge me ;)

It’s all Geek to Me

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

This is a variation of the guest posting I wrote for Lara here.

If you meet me in real life (you should've taken the blue pill), you might not guess it, but I am a bit eccentric. I have learned, after many an embarrassing situation, to "blend in"- to move around you unseen, listening to your non-geeky conversations, watching your non-geeky outings. I am not easily pigeon-holed into just being a "geek"- oh, no! I have many shades of geekness. Observe:

The types of geek I am, and have been, are:

  1. Star Wars geek
As a young teen, I stood in line to see "Empire" and "Jedi." As an adult, I took off from work to see the first showings of the rereleases in '98 and '99. I met David Prowse, bitches!
  2. Mac Computer geek
From the release of the 256k Macintosh in 1984 to current day- you can take my Mac when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!
  3. Movie and TV geek
Wednesday and Friday nights are for pussies- Tuesday and Thursday night midnight pre-releases are for professionals!
  4. PHP coder geek
I go to coding conventions. Nuff said?
  5. Food geek
    The Food Network is porn.
  6. History geek
Ancient Mysteries of the Bible was, like, the best series EVER!
  7. Gamer geek
I've played a few games of AD&D and have been known to wield a wicked tinder box, not to mention four years of hanging around Goths playing Vampire.
  8. oh, and Downtown Frederick geek
I do love to push the great town I live in!

BTW- if you think you're not a geek, remind yourself that you're reading a blog on a computer... GEEK! ;)

  • Screengrab software- check!
  • Tissues and hand cream- check! (what?! I have a cold and my skin is dry!)

As many of you know, the big Apple event is happening in 10 minutes and 30, 29, 28 seconds. EVERYone online has mentioned it at least once it seems. Say what you will about Apple, love them or hate them, you can't deny that they are masters of buzz!

Of course, many of you have guessed that I fall in the "Mac Faithful" camp and I'm as much a fan of their marketing department as I am of their products (see my article here).

I was at MacWorld New York 2000 and saw Jobs give his keynote where he unveiled "The Cube," a brilliant computer that made me want to buy it on looks alone. It was doomed though, because it was too expensive with too little expandability (see betamax). Apple has consistently created innovative products marketing that annually (mid-to-late January) taxes the limits of the net's broadband.

blah-blah-blah. Screw this! Gotta get ready! posting AFTER the iSlate iPad iPlatter announcement!
